Elected Eastbourne councillors have agreed not to take an increase in the basic allowances they are paid for being on the council – due to the pandemic.

A scheme provides all 27 members on Eastbourne council are each entitled to an allowance of £2,808 per year and some councillors receive extra allowances for undertaking duties like the mayor and council leader.

A recent review recommended the allowance should rise to £3,732 but councillors said that with so many people suffering financially due to the pandemic, they would not be taking the increase.
