Surrey batted first and scored a healthy 171 for seven despite three for 32 from the pick of the Sussex bowlers, Ashar Zaidi.
Luke Wright staked a claim for an England T20 start with 56 in the home side’s reply but it looked like they would fall just short when they needed 15 off four balls. But a six and two fours - including a four off the last ball from three of those got Sussex home.
Six penalty runs awarded against Surrey for a slow over rate just before the end helped the Sharks on their way to the unlikely victory.
Sussex have a quick chance to build on the win - they play their second game against Middlesex at Lord’s on Saturday.
