Table-topping Saxons return to winning ways

After suffering their first Sussex Open Hockey League Division One loss of the season the previous weekend, Saxons responded with a 5-3 victory at home to Middleton.
On a foggy afternoon at Horntye Park, the home side took the lead through a short corner goal scored by Alex Coombs.

Hide AdShortly after, Olli Beal continued his fine form in front of goal after Tudor Stainsby passed at least four players on a run from the halfway line.
Middleton replied following a spot of miscommunication in the home defence, but Saxons restored their two-goal lead when Toby Reed finished a classic short corner routine which has worked so many times previously.
In the second half, Saxons’ man of the match Paddy Cornish made a brave last ditch tackle on the edge of the D before Middleton got one back to make it 3-2.
Saxons responded through a penalty flick by Coombs. The flick was awarded for a foot on the line from a shot by Reed which most thought had crossed the line.

Hide AdJamie Busbridge, back from his winter break, scored Saxons’ final goal before Middleton netted a late consolation. The matchball sponsor was Old El Paso restaurants.
It was a good performance from Saxons against strong opposition and they remain six points clear at the top ahead of the trip to bottom side Worthing II this coming Saturday.
