The Bexhill Sainsburys at Buckhurst Place will be 40 years old on Wednesday (June 8).

Over the years the Bexhill Sainsburys has supported many local charities and good causes by making donations or letting them collect outside the store.

Store manager Gavin Boddy said: “The store is still going very strong with customers still shopping today who were shopping here 40 years ago.

“It’s a beautiful store that still has a lovely community feel to it.”

Trading manager Liam Overington added: “It is a very special store, We have staff members who have been here many years, including one lady who has been here since it opened.”

Sainsbury’s will be celebrating the landmark occasion on Wednesday with banners and balloons and a special meet and greet session with customers at lunchtime.

Sainsburys re-located from an original smaller store, which was close to the seafront.

This is how a Sainsburys journal reported the store opening 40 years ago.

“They don’t believe in getting up early in Bexhill, where life is lived at a slow, leisurely pace.

“But by the time the store was ready to open there was a queue 60 yards long.

“Once inside the new store the sedate Bexhill residents couldn’t help being caught up in the fast-moving excitement and bustle of being the first to shop in a sparkling new supermarket.
