UNDER-16 Summerley Park Rangers 14 Rustington Otters 0 Summerley won the first game of their Challenge Cup campaign with a very disciplined performance against Rustington. The Otters play two divisions below Summerley and never really threatened. Mepham and Worsley both scored hat-tricks and defender Terry added a rare goal after latching on to a pinpoint through-ball from Millard. Millard, Crouch (2), Hand, Rafferty, Kilhams and Ashmore also contributed well-taken goals. The stand-out performance from Summerley was from man of the match Tilley-Griffin, who provided a series of superb crosses and corners to assist in six of the first eight Summerley goals. Credit goes to both teams for the tremendous spirit that the game was played in - the Otters never let their heads drop. UNDER-14 Felpham Colts Athletic 5 Whyke United 3 A close encounter saw Athletic triumph with strikers Harry Salt and Ben Riley coming to their rescue in the second half. Whyke took the lead and quickly went two up before delightful control from Ed Sargent set up Salt for Felpham’s opener. Riley, who arguably has the finest left foot in the division, made it 2-2 with a trademark strike of power and accuracy. Whyke soon recaptured the lead against a sleepy defence only for Riley to come to the rescue again just before half-time to make it 3-3. Tactical changes saw a tighter Felpham defence after the break and Whyke were reduced to half-chances. Felpham wore down Whyke with slick passing with man of the match Sargent at the heart of it. Salt completed his hat trick in fine style. UNDER-13 Chichester City Youth 1 Rustington 5 Chichester’s disappointing form in the cup continued against the same team who knocked them out last year. They started brightly and Josh Airton had a number of chances in the first ten minutes but these could not be converted. Chichester were forced to make an early substitution with Jay Clarke coming off. Rustington started to gain the upper hand and scored two quick goals. Alex Smith passed a lovely ball to Airton but his shot went wide. Oliver Stonefrost worked an excellent opening but could not find the net. An attacking Rustington move was met with a rash tackle which forced a free-kick outside the area which was converted to make it 3-0 at half-time. In the second half Chichester started to believe they could get back into it, Joseph Chuter worked hard to control the defence. Tom Burden eventually scored from a corner. But Rustington had the better late chances, scoring two further goals to put the game out of reach. UNDER-TEN East Preston 1 Chichester City Colts Reds 0 On a soggy pitch, Chichester attacked the Preston goal with JJ Buxton coming close on three occasions with midfield players Osmend and LLewellyn working hard. Preston were more attacking in the second half but defenders Lewis, Warrington and Hawkins dealt with the pressure and keeper Harding pulled off good saves. With the last kick East Preston scored a scrambled goal from a corner. Man of the match was Jack Botley, who was outstanding today in centre of defence. CHICHESTER: Harding, Lewis, Warrington, Hawkins, Botley, Llewellyn, Osmend, Buxton. UNDER-NINE Pulborough Pythons 1 Avisford Youth 0 On a lovely surface, Avisford struggled to find their passing game and fell to their second successive defeat. Neither side could create any real openings in the first half. Avisford, driven on in midfield by captain Finlay Brian, could not really create any openings throughout the game. In the second half a defensive error allowed Pulborough to score the winning goal. Despite Avisford’s attempts to get back into it, Pulbrough held on. UNDER-EIGHT Chichester City Colts under-eights (Year 3 age pupils) are looking for new players. Training is held at New Park Road in Chichester on Saturday mornings from 10am to 11am with FA qualified coaches. * Teams from Barnham Trojans played for the Great Ballard Charity Cup in conjunction with the school’s charity day. Boys from the under-12 red and blue teams and the under-11 blues competed in a tough six-a-side tournament on a lovely day on top of the South Downs. The morning saw a league style programme where all the teams played each other. Following lunch, the tournament concluded with two hard-fought semis-finals and a gripping final between one of the under-11 blue teams and the under-12 blues. It was eventually won by the under-12 blues in extra time. The trophy and medal presentation saw Susan Jay hand the cup to the worthy winners (pictured at the top of the article). Barnham Trojans have nearly 300 children involved from the age of five up to 17. It is the second biggest youth football club in West Sussex and their inclusive approach means boys and girls from all backgrounds and abilities are able to get involved in a team sport. The children come from more than 25 different primary, prep, state and private schools across the area. Great Ballard have been incredibly supportive in welcoming the under-11 blues to train and play home games on their grounds. The tournament was another example of this, with a perfectly marked-out pitch, a great cup, medals for all the boys and a bargain lunch. Great Ballard School’s charity day also included wheelchair hockey with everyone was encouraged to have a go. Since the Olympics, the whole school has been inspired to try out all sort of activities and pupils have even had a visit from an Olympic torchbearer. One of the school’s most popular activities this term has been mountain biking – perhaps another legacy from the Olympic successes.
